Learn how to prep dahlias at Sequim work party this Saturday

SEQUIM — The Sequim Botanical Garden Society will host the season’s final Work to Learn Party with a spotlight on dahlias.

Lee Bowen, the group’s dahlia expert, will demonstrate digging, dividing and storing of dahlia tubers for the winter beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Terrace Garden in Carrie Blake Community Park, near the James Center for the Performing Arts band shell.

Participants will be encouraged to work alongside volunteer garden society members as they remove the tubers from the ground, clean them and then learn the secret to dividing viable tubers that, after storing over the winter, will be planted and bloom next summer.

Or, they could come by the garden to observe the dahlia activity and learn about this year’s Terrace Garden renovation and preparation and fundraising efforts for the Rose Garden, the next Sequim Botanical Garden project.

The Sequim Botanical Garden Society is a volunteer partner with the city of Sequim and a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

From spring to fall, Work to Learn Parties are an opportunity for novice and seasoned gardeners to volunteer together to cultivate what makes the community park “delightful, distinctive and flourishing,” group members have said.

To help during the party, bring gardening gloves, tools, sunscreen and a hat. Or mingle with other members of the community dedicated to growing the botanical garden.

She worked with the Yakima Sheriff’s Department to capture the mini stallion when he was running alongside a freeway, deftly evading capture. Without her help, and an offer to take him home, the sheriff’s department planned on taking the then-untrained pony to a local holding pen to await transport to a slaughter house in Canada. Instead, Paliday is now happily living the rest of days out as a gelding at the sanctuary.
