JOHN NELSON’S LIVE MUSIC COLUMN: Lavender part of the live music rainbow

THE LAVENDER FESTIVAL is in full swing this weekend and has a plethora of live music from off the Peninsula as well as locals playing at the farms, street fair and other venues.

The full schedule of events can be found in the program delivered in last Friday’s Peninsula Daily News, at the PDN offices and at various places in Sequim.

But that’s not all the music this week on our beautiful Peninsula.

Port Angeles

• Arriving this week from Hawaii is Freesound for their annual appearance in Port Angeles, and they can be found at Castaways Restaurant and Night Club, 1213 Marine Drive, Friday and Saturday from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. This rock ‘n’ roll band features two Port Angeles High School grads coming home to their roots. Be sure to stop in and say “Hi!” $3 cover.

Tonight, the Sundowners host a jam from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. These fellas really know how to have fun!

• On Friday at Bar N9ne, 229 W. First St., the last Port Angeles appearance of the Lonely H will take place at 9 p.m. This local band won the Experience Music Project competition right out of high school several years ago, and they’re now moving to Nashville to further their careers. You’ll hear original rock ‘n’ roll as well as covers and maybe even a little Johnny Cash.

Opening for Lonely H is Man of the Woods. $5 cover.

• On Friday at the R Bar (formerly the Other Side), 134 E. Front St., Robot Pi plays at 9:30 p.m. $2 Cover.

Next Wednesday, Sarah Shea and Chez Jazz will perform.

• Wine on the Waterfront, 115 Railroad Ave., announces the return of award-winning Seattle-based singer/songwriter Kristen Connell Friday at 8 p.m. Connell plays contemporary folk and Americana. $3 cover.

• On Friday at the Coo Coo’s Nest, 1017 E. First St., BBR with the Business perform classic ’50s and ’60s rock at 9 p.m.

• On Sunday, the Junction Roadhouse, junction of U. S. Highway 101 and state Route 112 five miles west of Port Angeles, has Barry Burnett with the Sunday Jam from 8 p.m. to midnight.

Jason Mogi is on summer hiatus and will not be appearing every Wednesday

• Dave Secord and Rosalie and the whole Luck of the Draw gang are at the Fairmount Restaurant, on U. S. Highway 101 west of Port Angeles, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. with the Tuesday acoustic jam. Don’t be left out!

• On Friday night, the Veela Cafe, 133 E. First St., has Jim Lind providing both rock and country, fast and slow, from his impressive repertoire at 7:30 p.m.

• Every Tuesday evening, the Port Angeles Senior Swingers present Wally and the Boys playing ballroom dance favorites for the dancing pleasure of all seniors 45 years plus from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Port Angeles Senior Center, Seventh and Peabody streets. $5 cover. First-timers free!

Sequim

• Tonight, don’t miss the jam hosted by Chantilly Lace at the Oasis Sports Bar and Grill, 301 E. Washington St., from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Any Thursday night you’ll find some of the best jammers from your favorite bands joining in the fun. Classic rock and country from the ’50s and ’60s, blues and pop from later decades are all in the broad repertoire honed over 35 years. Jammers: Come in early and sign in on the sign-up sheet.

On Friday, rock out, country style, with the Jim Hoffman Band. Bring your dancing shoes cuz you just can’t help but get on the dance floor. $3 cover

On Saturday, jazz it up with — what else? — jazz featuring Sarah Shea and Chez at 7 p.m.

Next Tuesday, stop by for an Irish Session from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

On Wednesday, stop in for some country, bluegrass and some history of the roots of both genres with Jubilee from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

• On Saturday, Howly Slim performs original tunes with vocals and guitar at Las Palomas Mexican Restaurant, 1085 E. Washington, at 5:30 p.m.

• On Friday, Chez Jazz with Sarah Shea plays at Dungeness Bay Wine and Cheese, 123 E. Washington St., from 6 p.m.

• At The Buzz, 128 N. Sequim Ave., Kelly Thomas hosts the very popular and rousing open mic Wednesday from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

• At Stymies Bar and Grill at Cedars at Dungeness, Woodcock Road, Dana Osborne does a solo gig Friday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

• Tonight at 7 Cedars Casino, Blyn, in the Club Seven Lounge, Dana Osborne and 2 Miles High play originals and classics from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Get your groove on with Groove Edition Friday from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. and Saturday, from 7 p.m. to 10:45 p.m.

On Sunday, get your country up with the Jim Hoffman Band from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Monday’s jazz program features Jazz in Blume with jazz and blues vocalist Jenny Davis from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Port Hadlock

• Tonight at the Ajax Cafe, 271 Water St., Buzz Rogowski will perform for the Alexandria Nicole Wine Dinner at 6 p.m.

On Saturday, 41 Miles plays, as a duo, their original songs on guitar and vocals at 6 p.m.

On Sunday, Jim Nyby plays blues, ballads, jazz and soul at 5:30 p.m.

Port Townsend

• Tonight at The Upstage, 923 Washington St., Mark Growden plays roots, blues and originals at 7:30 p.m. $7 cover.

On Friday, the original Blues Brother, Curtis Salgado, and his band get your blues juices flowin’ at 8 p.m. $25 advance, $28 at the door.

On Saturday, stop in for a double shot. At 3 p.m., Robert Force plays mandolin, and at 8 p.m. Jim Nyby and the F Street Band will get you dancing $6 cover.

On Sunday, the Atomic Duo, Fat Man and Little Boy, will nuke you at 7:30 p.m. $9 cover.

On Tuesday, Towns End Live features Steve Lewis and friends at 7 p.m. $5 cover.

On Wednesday, prepare yourself for some rockabilly from the legendary Tex-Mex Rosie Flores Band at 8 p.m. $12 cover.

• On Friday, hail the Locust Street Taxi for a fun ride at Port Townsend Brewing, 330 10th St., from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

On Sunday, John Nelson — what? — it can’t be me cuz I can’t carry a tune even if’n I had a fleet o’ dump trucks — performs, in tune, folks, blues and roots, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

• On Friday, hip-hop over to Siren’s, 823 Water St., for some Pseudo Slang to get your hip-hop fix at 8 p.m. $5 cover.

On Saturday, enjoy the folk/blues of local musicians Beyond Norway at 9 p.m.

• On Saturday, Castle Key Restaurant, Seventh and Sheridan streets, has Casey McGill and the Blue Four Trio jazzin’ from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. $12 cover.

• On Friday at family-friendly Better Living Through Coffee Organic Coffee House, 100 Tyler St. (on the water), the six-piece Umatilla Flats Jazz Band plays straight-ahead jazz standards from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. They’ll have some great burgers, too!

Community Concerts

• Next Tuesday in Sequim, tap your toes and kick up your heels to acoustic folk rock of the Late Bloomers at the James Center for the Performing Arts at Carrie Blake Park, 202 N. Blake Ave., from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

• In Port Angeles’ Concert on the Pier series next Wednesday, enjoy the big band sounds of Olympic Express Big Band from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Music News

• Friends of Fort Flagler Concert in the Park at Battery Bankhead introduces a new duo to the Northwest, Doug and Telicia Williams, playing Americana at its best. Their latest CD, “Ghost of a Knoxville Girl” spent 15 weeks on the Americana Music Associations top 40 radio chart. It’s outside, so dress accordingly, Saturday at 7 p.m. $5 donation appreciated.

• On Saturday, the Washington Old Time Fiddlers will have a large contingent at the Port Angeles Farmers Market, The Gateway, downtown, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
