JOHN NELSON’S LIVE MUSIC: Celebrations for birthdays, chili and finales

THIS WEEK’S LIVE music schedule includes several birthday celebrations, final appearances, a chili cook-off and more.

So, get a group together and go out to hear some live music and make your own celebration.

Port Angeles

• Tonight, at Castaways Restaurant and Night Club, 1213 Marine Drive, the Sundowners host a jam from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. These fellas really know how to have fun!

The Jimmy Hoffman Band has triple duty this weekend playing both Friday and Saturday from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. $3 cover, and also Saturday afternoon, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., for Castaways’ first annual Chili Cook-off, with corn bread! That’s 12 hours of quality, danceable country, rock and more in two days. For more info on the cook-off, call 360-452-1177 after 4 p.m.

• On Friday at the Junction Roadhouse, junction of U.S. Highway 101 and state Route 112, five miles west of Port Angeles, the roots rock of Junkyard Jane will get you movin’ and a groovin’ on the dance floor from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. $5 cover.

Need a ride for this one? All Points Charters and Tours will again be providing safe transportation Friday night.

On Sunday, Barry Burnett invites you to come out early and dance to a variety of music during the open mic jam from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

On Wednesday, The Good Medicine Band with Jason, Ches and Justin help Tonya (owner), Kurt (bartender), and John (revered patron), celebrate their birthdays from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. They’ll have their cake and eat it, too!

• Kokopelli’s Underground, 203 E. Front St., is gonna rock and roll to the sound of SuperTrees Saturday at 9 p.m., so get out your dancin’ shoes! $3 cover.

• Tonight marks the final appearance of our departing diva, Lynn Peterson, at Wine on the Waterfront, 115 Railroad Ave. Come on down and wish her well on her return to Nevada. Tonight she’ll be accompanied by Linda Dowdell and Ron Newton, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. $3 cover.

• The Second Friday Art Rock (after the Art Walk) comes to Wine on the Waterfront with new local band Bdumpbump bringing a smorgasbord of musical styles from hoedowns to Brazilian bossa nova, bluegrass to funk, and more, at 8:30 p.m. Artist in residence Jeff Tocher, after his judging at the “Fish on a Fence” fundraiser earlier, will be painting a large canvas of the art rock event itself. $3 cover.

On Saturday the Bluenotes return for an evening of Coltrane- and Davis-inspired sounds at 7:30 p.m. $5 cover.

• On Monday at the Bushwhacker Restaurant, 1527 E. First St., Charlie Ferris and his Memories and Melodies Show will have a little twang as he’s added some country tunes to his broad repertoire. Charlie (with the twang he didn’t think he had) and his posse, Charlie’s Angels, will be there from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. or so.

• Dave Secord and Rosalie and the whole Luck of the Draw gang are back at the Fairmount Restaurant, on U.S. Highway 101 west of Port Angeles, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. with the Tuesday acoustic jam. Don’t be left out!

• On Friday night, The Veela Cafe, 133 E. First St., has Jim Lind providing both rock and country, fast and slow, from his impressive repertoire, from 7:30 p.m.

• Every Tuesday, evening the Port Angeles Senior Swingers present Wally and the Boys playing ballroom dance favorites for the dancing pleasure of all seniors 45 years plus from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Port Angeles Senior Center, Seventh and Peabody streets. $5 cover, first-timers free!

Sequim and Blyn

• Tonight, don’t miss the jam hosted by Chantilly Lace at the Oasis Sports Bar and Grill, 301 E. Washington St., from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Any Thursday night you’ll find some of the best jammers from your favorite bands joining in the fun. Classic rock and country from the ’50s and ’60s, blues and pop from later decades, are all in the broad repertoire honed over 35 years. Jammers come in early and sign in on the sign-up sheet.

On Friday, Skidder Hill plays bluegrass, old-time and country from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

On Saturday, the Oasis rocks to the sounds of Big Fine Daddies from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. $3 cover.

On Wednesday, Jubilee plays their old-time country music from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

• Howly Slim sings and plays guitar Saturday at Las Palomas Restaurant, 1085 E. Washington St., from 5:30 p.m.

• At The Buzz, 128 N. Sequim Ave., Kelly Thomas hosts the very popular and rousing open mic Wednesday from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

• Lynn Peterson continues her countdown to Nevada on Friday at Stymies Bar and Grill at Cedars at Dungeness, 1965 Woodcock Road, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., with Linda Dowdell at the keyboards. Don’t miss this chance to see the lively and lovely Lynn before she heads south.

• Tonight at 7 Cedars Casino, Blyn, in the Club Seven Lounge, Jim Hoffman (guitar) and Buck (fiddle) play your country dance favorites from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

On Friday and Saturday, Nite Crew invites you to come and dance to newer top 40 favorites and meet Virginia from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

On Sunday, the Funaddicts play disco, swing and more to dance to from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Monday Jazz Night features Mary Lou Montgomery and Nostalgia from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Come out and dance ’till you can’t.

Port Hadlock

• Tonight at the Ajax Cafe, 271 Water St., Buzz Rogowski plays jazz and originals on piano at 6 p.m.

Jack Reed entertains Friday starting at 6 p.m.

Buzz returns on Saturday, also at 6 p.m.

On Sunday, Jim Nyby plays blues, ballads, jazz, and soul at 5:30 p.m.

Port Townsend

• On Friday at the Upstage, 923 Washington St., acclaimed bluesman John Nemeth and his band play at 8 p.m. $12 cover.

On Saturday, the Robin Bessier Quartet plays at 7:30 p.m. Joining Robin, vocals, are: Herb Payson, piano; Tom Svornich, drums; and Steve Luceno, bass and guitar. $9 cover.

Next Wednesday, enjoy the Chuck Easton Recitals at 6 p.m. No cover.

• On Friday at Water Street Brewing, 639 Water St., dance to the folk, bluegrass and Americana of the Bitterroots at 9 p.m. Cover.

On Saturday, join local rock band Volition with members of Burnin’ Mountain at 9 p.m. Cover.

• The Delta Rays shine Friday night from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Port Townsend Brewing Co., 330 10th St.

On Sunday, Howly and Da’ Boys will be playing at 3 p.m.

• Kris Orlowski entertains Saturday at 9 p.m. at Sirens, 823 Water St., $5.

• Glad to see Rasri Thai & Sushi, 2230 Washington St., with another contribution to the live music scene and Bruce Cowan entertaining Saturday at 6 p.m.

• On Saturday, at Manresa CastleSSRqs Castle Key Restaurant, Seventh and Sheridan streets, the Skip Morris Trio plays jazz from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. $8 cover.

• On Saturday at the Undertown, 211 Taylor St., join George Rezendes as he celebrates his birthday with the Toolshed Trio and special guests from 7:30 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Music news

• The Washington Old-Time Fiddlers are having a campout this weekend at the Sequim Prairie Grange, 290 Macleay Road, with public-welcome performances Friday at 7 p.m., Saturday matinee at 1 p.m. and Saturday night at 6:30. No charge, but donations for their fiddle lesson scholarships are gratefully accepted.
