LETTER: Yes, it makes sense

Yes, it makes sense

I played in a table-top role-playing game many years ago.

We were in a strange city after being shipwrecked.

Someone cut my purse.

We chased him, caught him, and got my money back.

He shouted for the City Guards, the police of that day.

We planned to stay and explain the man was a thief, when the Game Master said, “You can have all the justice that you can afford.”

We ran.

Wow.

In any time, place or culture, the rich and powerful can get justice.

It is much to America’s credit that people can get free legal representation.

In his March 31 column, Cal Thomas objects to paying for lawyers to help current undocumented immigrants.

Thomas asks, “Does this make sense?”

Yes.

If you kill and eat people, you deserve a lawyer.

If you crossed a border to ask about becoming an American, you deserve a lawyer.

Having a lawyer on each side makes the legal process fairer.

It is important to fund public defenders locally and nationally.

It is one of the better elements of the American system.
