For decades the Republican party has claimed opposition to government overreach.
Ronald Reagan, the union buster, helped to destroy the middle class by pushing for deregulation of industry and workers’ rights.
Deregulation of the banking industry led to the last housing bubble and economic collapse.
Republicans frequently object to regulations intended to protect the environment on which life depends.
They refuse to sufficiently regulate the leading cause of death among children ages one to 19 in this country, as reported by NPR for the year 2020: guns.
Yet conservative justices, legislators and governors across the country seek to regulate the most intimate aspects of a woman’s body, health, and family life by making it illegal for her to abort a fetus not yet developed enough to survive outside of her body.
Where is the moral consistency here?
Living children are dying by dangerous weapons which proliferate without sufficient regulation.
Meanwhile too many women and children live in poverty with little support among conservatives to provide healthcare, childcare, and housing for those struggling in poverty.
There is always a man involved in conception, but the man does not carry and bear the child.
He does not risk his health or livelihood to bring a child into the world.
No one should be able to legislate against the right of a woman to choose not to have a child.
It is particularly offensive when the same legislators refuse to protect these vulnerable children after birth.
