Fiddles featured at upcoming Grange jam

PORT TOWNSEND — Fiddler Joel Brown will lead the Quimper Grange Old Time Jam at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

No tickets are required but a donation of $1 or $2 is asked to cover the hall use cost at the grange, 1219 Corona St.

The Quimper Grange Jam is a led jam, so players don’t have to know how to start a tune or remember what key they are playing in.

Songs are played in two keys and the first tune is broken down for learning. Then the group plays tunes at a moderate pace, meaning not slower than molasses and not at breakneck speed.

Brown is called a “heck of a fine fiddler” and plays tunes participants just might want to catch, organizers said.

He’ll start by teaching “Laurel Lonesome” (AEAE tuning on fiddles).

To get a taste of Brown’s fiddling perspective participants can listen to Cameron DeWhitt’s podcast interview with Brown at http://www.cameron dewhitt.com/getupinthecool/joelbrown.

The purpose of the monthly Old Time Jam is to further Quimper Grange’s mission of “fostering community connection” by pursuing the goal of “creating a vibrant live music and dance community.”

This is an opportunity to learn new tunes and practice learning to play old time string band music by ear in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, organizers said.

All levels of experience are welcome and are expected to be easy for less experienced players to participate. Tunes are chosen by the jam leader.
