SEQUIM — The former Office Depot space in Sequim Village Marketplace is tentatively set to become a Sportsman’s Warehouse.
Staff with the City of Sequim confirmed they’ve approved the franchise’s building improvement plans for 1235 W. Washington St., but they await a final fee payment before they can issue a building permit.
The retail store with locations in 30 states focuses on outdoor gear for camping, fishing, hunting and shooting.
According to remodeling plans from architect G.A. Architects of Salt Lake City, Utah, renovations will cost about $2 million, with about $1.2 million for labor and about $813,000 for materials.
Cameron Construction, also of Salt Lake City, is named the contractor in the application.
Sportsman’s Warehouse and Washington Capital representatives could not be reached for comment on when city fees would be paid, remodeling would begin, how many employees would be hired, and when they plan to open the Sequim store.
The closest Sportsman’s Warehouse is in Silverdale. If built, the Sequim location would join outdoor retailers in the immediate area such as Big 5 Sporting Goods, Coastal Farm & Ranch and Walmart, along with smaller outdoor sport retailers across the North Olympic Peninsula.
Sequim Village Marketplace’s retail space is mostly owned by an investment for local building tradesmen’s retirement funds that are managed by Washington Capital Management, Inc. of Seattle to build and lease pads. Costco, First Federal and Home Depot are separately owned.
The Office Depot closed in late 2022 following Grocery Outlet in January 2022; both leased space from Washington Capital.
Spirit Halloween occupied the former Grocery Outlet from Aug. 20 until early November 2022. Ulta Beauty also leased space at 1065 W. Washington St. and closed in early 2020 before reopening last year for unknown reasons, as company representatives could not be reached.
