ORCAS —

A collision between a state ferry and a small sailboat in the San Juan Islands is under investigation by ferry officials and the Coast Guard.

Washington State Ferries spokeswoman Marta Coursey said the 382-foot ferry Hyak was en route from San Juan Island to Orcas Island when it collided with the 25-foot sailboat Friday afternoon.

There were no injuries reported, the Coast Guard said, and the sailboat’s single occupant was rescued.

The sailboat sank in 250 feet of water.

Coast Guard Petty Officer 1st Class David Mosley said the ferry’s captain and crew passed sobriety testing administered by the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office.

Washington State Ferries said the Hyak returned to service with a 9 p.m. Friday sailing from Anacortes.
