PREP SOFTBALL: Port Angeles bounces back to sweep Sequim

SEQUIM — The Port Angeles softball team bounced back from its only loss of the year to complete a two-game sweep over Olympic Peninsula rival Sequim 12-3 in Sequim

The Roughriders got up 4-0 in the first inning and never looked back. Sophia Ritchie had a big game, going 3-for-3 with a double, two runs scored, two RBIs and a stolen base. Lily Anne Lancaster also had a solid game, going 2-for-4 with three runs scored.

Kennedy Rognlien had a double and scored two runs, Morgan Politika had a hit and two RBIs and newcomer Nyomie Colfax had a hit, a run scored and two RBIs.

In the circle, the Riders’ Lynzee Reid went the distance, allowing seven hits and two earned runs. She struck out two. Rylie Whitehead went the distance for Sequim. She went seven innings, allowing 11 hits and five earned runs as she was hurt by four Sequim errors. She struck out two.

For Sequim, Kylie Winter went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base, while Mattie Messenger had a double and an RBI. Seren McClurken went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Port Angeles (5-0, 7-1), lost Wednesday to 3A South Kitsap but remains unbeaten in league play, tied for first place with North Kitsap. The Riders next play at Bremerton (0-4, 0-5) at 4:15 p.m. Monday, then host North Mason (1-3, 4-4) at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Dry Creek Elementary.

Sequim (2-3, 2-4) plays at Kingston (1-3, 5-4) at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Cedar Park Christian 20, Sequim 4

BOTHELL — The Sequim baseball team allowed 10 runs to Cedar Park Christian in the first inning Saturday and could never recover in a 20-4 non-league loss.

Lincoln Bear went 3-for-3 with a triple and four RBIs, while Zeke Schmadeke was 2-for-3 with two doubles and three runs scored.

Sequim (4-2, 4-4) next hosts Olympic (3-3, 4-5) at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday in an Olympic League game. Port Angeles’ (1-4, 4-4) scheduled Saturday game at North Mason (2-3, 4-4) was postponed to 4 p.m. Monday in Belfair.

Track and Field

East Jefferson at Birger Solberg Invite

BELLINGHAM — East Jefferson hurdler Arden Moore finished second in the 300-meter hurdles in the prestigious Birger Solberg Invitational in Bellingham.

More than 30 schools competed in the event, including several 3A and 4A schools. Moore did the 300 hurdles in 48.12 seconds, a season-best for her and the fourth-best 300 time posted by a 1A girl this season.

Other top finishes included a sixth-place finish by East Jefferson’s girls 4×400 team (Abby O’Keefe, Alli Applewhite, Leah Ferland and Moore) in 4:41.19.

Nico Errichetti finished fifth in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 7:04.72.

A number of Rivals’ runners set personal-best times. Joshua Yearian had a personal best in the 1,600 (4:28.16) to finish 10th. Michael Gregg had a personal best (12:35.63) in the girls’ 3,200 to finish 13th, while Ferland had a personal best (5:34.65) in the 1,600 to finish 15th.
