PULLMAN — A 21-year-old Port Townsend man attending Washington State University allegedly shot and killed his roommate early Friday morning.
Ashley Allen “Ash” Gilmore, a 2001 Port Townsend High School graduate, was arrested around 2 a.m. Friday and jailed for second-degree manslaughter.
The shooting appears to have been accidental, a Pullman police spokeswoman said.
The roommate, 20-year-old Joseph N. Tibbs of Gig Harbor, died within minutes of the shooting, Whitman County Coronor Peter J. Martin said.
Gilmore was ordered held on $25,000 bond in a Friday afternoon appearance before Whitman County Superior Court Judge David Frazier.
If Gilmore’s parents sign a wavier, he could be released on his own recognizance from the Whitman County Jail in Colfax.
Formal charges have not yet been filed in the shooting, Senior Deputy Prosecutor Byron Bedirian said.
