PREP SOCCER: Forks girls win second match in saved season

FORKS — The Forks girls soccer team won Monday, but more importantly, they are getting to have a season.

Earlier this fall, it appeared that Forks might have to suspend its girls soccer season because it did not have a coach. Several games had to be postponed. But boys basketball coach Keith Weekes stepped in to coach the team.

The Spartans have now played four games, going 2-2. They played their first home game Monday, playing a makeup game with East Jefferson that was canceled in early September. East Jefferson coach Rob Cantley brought a team of mostly JV players to Forks, and the Forks girls played a strong game, winning 7-0.

“We wanted to help them out and give them a game,” Cantley said. “Forks runs hard and plays with a lot of passion.”

The Spartans also beat Hoquiam 6-0 for their other win and gave Raymond-South Bend a decent game with a 4-2 loss.

Forks will next play at Winlock today and has its next home game at 6 p.m. Thursday against Elma.

East Jefferson also got the game in during a long break in its schedule. The Rivals (0-2-1, 2-5-1) next play Tuesday, hosting Cascade Christian in Port Townsend Memorial Stadium at 5 p.m.
