COLLEGE MEN’S BASKETBALL: Pirates tied for first after romp over Olympic

PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula College men’s basketball team got monster games from Ese Onakpoma and Javon Ervin and shot nearly 60 percent from the floor in a 93-79 win over Olympic, moving into a tie for first place in the North Region.
Meanwhile, the Peninsula women remained unbeaten and in first place in the North Region with an 85-61 win over Olympic on Saturday in Port Angeles.
Back to the men’s game, Onakpoma shot 81 percent from the floor (13-for-16) and hit three 3-pointers for 34 points. He added seven rebounds, four assists and three blocked shots.
Ervin nearly matched his output. He scored 27 points on 61 percent shooting (11-for-18) and seven rebounds.
Antonio Odum added nine points, while Aiden Olmstead had eight points and six rebounds and DeShawn Rushmeyer eight points.
The Pirates actually had a lead of 91-70 with under three minutes to play as Olympic closed the gap late to make the game appear closer than it was.
With the victory, Peninsula’s third in a row, the Pirates are 3-1 in the North (10-8 overall), tied with Shoreline for tops in the region.
Peninsula next plays a very tough road game Wednesday at 17-1 Skagit Valley (2-1 North Region) at 7 p.m.
