Clallam County crews extinguish grass fire

PORT ANGELES — A bucket brigade and Clallam County Fire District No. 2 crews extinguished a grass fire near the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe’s fish hatchery Sunday, district Chief Jake Patterson said.
Fireworks were suspected as the cause. The fire burned a 100- by 30-foot section of grass but caused no property damage, according to a fire district news release.
A group of Lower Elwha tribal members had formed a bucket brigade to extinguish the fire before crews arrived.
The fire was reported on the 700 block of Stratton Road at 12:47 p.m., according to a Peninsula Communications log.
Clallam 2 Fire-Rescue used hose lines to ensure any hot spots were extinguished, Patterson said.
“In the course of extinguishing the hot-spots, Firefighter/EMT Al Oman did manage to safely rescue a small garter snake from around the fire hoses,” Patterson said in a news release.
“Along with no snake injuries, there were no civilian or fire personnel injuries.”
Clallam 2 Fire-Rescue responded with one fire engine, one brush truck, two command vehicles, one water tender and 10 personnel.
