Crews rescue teenager stuck on rock in Sol Duc River

OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK — Crews with Clallam County fire departments and Olympic National Park rescued a 15-year-old boy who was stuck on a rock in the Sol Duc River on Monday afternoon.

Clallam County Fire District No. 2 Assistant Chief Dan Huff said at about 5:40 p.m. that the boy was cold and wet but safe.

He said other information about how the boy got stuck on a rock below Sol Duc Falls and what went into the rescue would be provided by Olympic National Park.

Crews responded Monday afternoon after a report that a child was stuck on a rock below Sol Duc Falls. Technical rescue teams went to the area. The child was reportedly uninjured.

Huff said crews were initially told the boy was 4 or 5 years old, but when they arrived to the falls they discovered he was 15 years old.

It wasn’t clear how the boy became stuck on the rocks directly below the bridge overlooking the waterfall.

Clallam County Chief Criminal Deputy Brian King said Clallam County Fire Districts 1 and 2 responded initially to assist rangers before help from Fire District 3 and Port Angeles Fire Department’s technical rescue team was requested.

Sol Duc Falls is about a mile hike from the trailhead, located on Sol Duc Hot Springs Road about 13 miles south of U.S. Highway 101 near Lake Crescent.
