PORT ANGELES — First responders worked Thursday evening to rescue a man who was injured while hiking the Little River Trail in Olympic National Park.

The man was believed to have broken his leg and fell into water about a mile up the trail, said Mike DeRousie, chief of Clallam Fire District No. 2.

The fire department had five firefighters and a medic responding and a park ranger was en route to the scene, he said.

“They are just about to the patient now,” DeRousie said at about 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

The call went out at about 3:55 p.m.

The man slipped and fell into a creek. Crews were concerned about a risk of hypothermia.

DeRousie said at about 5:10 p.m. that four ONP park rangers were near to the hiker.

The person the man was hiking with was forced to leave him and walk back to a nearby road to call 9-1-1 because of poor cellphone service, DeRousie said.

The name of the hiker was not yet available.
