PORT ANGELES — A water main break Sunday morning closed Ninth Street between Laurel and Oak streets, according to the city’s public works director.

A 10-inch asbestos concrete water line broke at about 11:30 a.m. Sunday, sending water down West Ninth Street, said Craig Fulton, Port Angeles public works director.

Fulton said the break was expected to be repaired by about 7 p.m. Sunday and that 10 customers were without water.

“Asbestos concrete is some of our oldest pipe,” he said. “They just go.”

He said the city is in the process of replacing the pipes and adding the replacement projects to the capitol facilities plan.

He said the last water main to break was a cast iron pipe about six months ago on Marine Drive.
