NEWS BRIEFS: Ediz Hook closure starts this evening . . . and other items

Published 12:01 am Friday, June 5, 2015

PORT ANGELES — Ediz Hook will be closed to vehicular traffic from 5:30 p.m. today until about 6 p.m. Saturday.

City workers will repair bridge abutments on a 25-foot-long, 27-foot-wide span on Marine Drive near the Nippon Paper Industries USA mill.

Vehicles will not be able to access or depart Ediz Hook during the closure. Any vehicles on the Hook prior to 5:30 p.m. today will remain there until the road is reopened.

Ediz Hook will remain open to pedestrian and bicycle traffic via the Waterfront Trail.

Coast Guard personnel will park on Nippon property and be shuttled to the station at the end of the Hook.

Nippon’s 160 hourly and salaried workers will park on the eastern side of the bridge and walk over a pedestrian walkway to the plant.

The city-owned bridge, which spans a former log canal, was built by previous mill owner Crown Zellerbach Corp.

It is being undermined by soil erosion on the north side of the span closest to Nippon.

The eroded portion will be backfilled as a temporary fix until 2016, when the abutments would be rebuilt under a $600,000 project in the city’s proposed capital facilities plan.

Trail closure

PORT ANGELES — Olympic Hot Springs will be closed Saturday through Wednesday while Olympic National Park crews replace a deteriorated bridge over Boulder Creek.

The bridge provides access to the hot springs, which are within the park’s backcountry in the Elwha Valley west of Port Angeles.

Access to the hot springs area and the pools will be closed.

The bridge will be replaced with a new foot log, according to the park.

The Boulder Creek camping area and the Appleton Pass and Boulder Lake trails will remain open.

Outage planned

PORT TOWNSEND — A power outage is planned Saturday for Indian Island and Marrowstone Island.

The outage will be from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Jefferson County Public Utility District said.

The outage is to allow replacement of the last power pole before Indian Island.

The work is necessary to prevent a major outage similar to last winter when another pole failed, the PUD said.

SEQUIM — About 105 Clallam County Public Utility District customers lost electrical power at about 3:25 p.m. Thursday.

At that the time, the cause and an estimated time of power restoration were unknown, he said.

WAVE survey

PORT ANGELES — The deadline for participating in an online survey on the future of Wave Broadband cable TV services has been extended to July 15.

Residents who fill out the survey can give their opinions about the adequacy of current cable services and potential future services, such as local community channels and a community media center.

The survey is part of the city’s cable-franchise renewal process with Wave Broadband. The city is updating the current franchise, granted in 2002.

The survey is available at www.cityofpa.us under “Latest News.”
