NEWS BRIEFS: Arts to Elders concert set Tuesday in Port Townsend . . . and other items

PORT TOWNSEND — The Arts to Elders program will host a free concert with the Choral Belles, the 25-member ensemble, at Seaport Landing this Tuesday afternoon.
All seniors in local retirement homes as well as friends and family of Seaport Landing residents are invited to the performance from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The Choral Belles, with director Marylou Montgomery, specialize in songs from the 1920s all the way into the 21st century.
The group was founded in 1996 with the mission of community service through music.
Tuesday’s concert is cosponsored by the Northwind Arts Center and the Port Townsend Arts Commission.

Wild stories
PORT ANGELES — The Olympic National Park Visitor Center, 3002 Mount Angeles Road, will hold Endangered Species Day storytime from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Friday.
Aimed at younger children, the event will host stories, songs, crafts and a puppet show.
This free event also is sponsored by the North Olympic Library System.

Paddlers club meeting set Wednesday
PORT ANGELES — The Olympic Peninsula Paddlers club will meet at the Vern Burton Community Center, 308 E. Fourth St., at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
This month’s presentation is “Paddling the Bowron Lakes in B.C.”
The public is invited.
Watch meeting
PORT ANGELES — There will be a neighborhood watch meeting for residents of South E Street at the emergency operations center, located downstairs in the basement of the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St.
The meeting is 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Representatives from the Port Angeles Police Department, Clallam County Sheriff’s Office, Prosecuting Attorney’s Office and Neighborhood Watch coordinators will discuss how to effectively communicate with law enforcement and more.
The program is free and open to Port Angeles residents.

Esprit DJ night
PORT ANGELES — Esprit attendees and the Port Scandalous Roller Derby will join together for a DJ night at The Metta Room, 132 E. Front St., from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Wednesday.
Come for a night of dancing, karaoke and lip-syncing.
There will be appetizers to dine on and Port Scandalous merchandise for sale, along with raffles.
Attendees can pay to make a derby girl sing or lip-sync for a small fee.
Donations and funds from raffles will go toward Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County.
Health series ends
SEQUIM — The Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., will conclude its “Taking Care of You” health series with a free workshop about meditation and overall health at 6 p.m. Thursday.
Instructor Kathryn Kitts will discuss some of the health benefits of practicing meditation, including reduced stress and anxiety as well as increased energy.
She will lead participants in a 20-minute session of the integrated Amrita meditation technique.
Workshop space is limited, so pre-registration is encouraged.
Drop-in attendees are welcome as space allows.

Wellness talk slated Wednesday in Sequim
SEQUIM — Dr. R. Bruce Williams will present a free WOW! Working on Wellness forum, “An Update on Diabetes, Osteoporosis and Thyroid Disease,” at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave., at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.
In his practice, Williams treats patients with a variety of endocrinology problems.
These include diabetes, thyroid disease, pituitary gland problems, calcium disorders, osteoporosis and adrenal gland malfunctions, as well as some patients who may have an endocrine disorder causing high blood pressure.
WOW! Working on Wellness is a health education series presented by the Dungeness Valley Health & Wellness Clinic, Sequim’s free clinic.
Compost training set in Chimacum on Thursday
CHIMACUM — Jefferson County Master Composter training will begin Thursday and go through June 4 at the Tri-Area Community Center, 10 West Valley Road.
Those interested in reducing food waste and making it a resource, creating soil amendments for gardens or learning how composting can lower our carbon footprint are encouraged to attend.
Become a Jefferson County Master Composter by attending this four-session training that explores topics such as soil health, vermicomposting, carbon sequestration, waste reduction and compost bin building.
The final class includes a local composting tour.
Training occurs every Thursday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
The cost is $40; Master Gardeners will be given a discount.
Preregistration is encouraged.
