In the photo at right, Joy Waddell of Port Angeles holds a portrait of her grandparents, Nellie and Ferrell Hefton, who both died of Alzheimer’s disease, as Waddell was about to begin the annual 2-mile Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Saturday at the Sequim unit of the Boys & Girls Club of the Olympic Peninsula.

More than 200 walkers were signed up to participate in the event with many more impromptu walkers joining in.

Event organizers said more than $25,000 in online pledges had registered and more donations were expected from participating teams.

The walk was hosted by the North Olympic Peninsula chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.
