Port Angeles schools to seek tech tax levy election in May

PORT ANGELES — A technology levy for the Port Angeles School District to purchase computers and related ware for students will go before the voters in a special election on May 20.

The School Board approved putting the measure before the public on Monday.

The four-year technology levy, which would total about $1.6 million per year, would begin at a rate of approximately $0.46 per $1,000 assessed valuation.

The owner of a $200,000 home would pay about $92 per year.

A state amendment which voters passed in November allows school levies to pass by a simple majority, rather than the 60 percent supermajority that had been needed.

A committee to determine the needs of the district and make a recommendation of how much was needed in funds, equipment and training worked for more than a year before recommending the technology levy be brought before voters later this year.
