PORT TOWNSEND – A Jamestown S’Klallam tribal representative told Jefferson County officials Monday that Beckett Point was a former village site and the discovery of human remains there should be handled with the utmost sensitivity.

“From the tribal point of view, human remains are a very sensitive issue,” Kathy Duncan, cultural specialist with the Jamestown S’Klallam tribe of Blyn, told about 50 officials and Beckett Point residents attending a meeting Monday to discuss the recent discovery of remains on the land jutting into Discovery Bay.

A second meeting of Jefferson County, state and tribal officials was set for 5 p.m. Thursday in the county commissioners’ chambers to continue the discussion.

The chambers are on the ground floor of Jefferson County Courthouse, 1820 Jefferson St., Port Townsend.

Reps. Lynn Kessler, D-Hoquiam, and Kevin Van De Wege, D-Sequim, are expected to attend the meeting, which will follow an unrelated courthouse renovation celebration.
