Port Townsend: 51-unit low-income housing tract wins unanimous approval

PORT TOWNSEND — A 51-unit low-income housing development won unanimous City Council approval Monday night.

The 6-0 vote came after more than four hours of council discussion of the Laurel Heights subdivision and followed an agreement by the developer to help build a daycare center nearby.

A group calling itself Neighbors for Responsible Development appealed the city hearing examiner’s preliminary approval of the $5.3 million project.

The opposition effort was spearheaded by Joey Pipia, who owns property adjacent to the site near Towne Point.

The council had to decide whether to uphold the appeal or order a compromise.
