Yule ball, concerts, dramatic presentations on Peninsula

A Yule ball, concerts and plays are offered this weekend on the North Olympic Peninsula.

In honor of the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, about 75 people paraded up Harrison Street in Port Townsend toward St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church on Monday afternoon. The police-escorted procession marked the day on which Roman Catholics believe the Virgin Mary appeared to Juan Diego, an indigenous man, in 1531. Mary, known as Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico, is the patron saint of that country and “the Mother of us all,” according to a handout at the parish. St. Mary Star of the Sea, the only Catholic church in Jefferson County, celebrates Sunday masses in Spanish and in English. (Diane Urbani de la Paz/for Peninsula Daily News)

Cutline: It’s common for horses in advanced stages of osteoarthritis to refuse to allow a hoof to be lifted off the ground due to high pain it causes. After watching a farrier on YouTube use a 2 x 6” board to stand the hoof on it with a side overhanging the edge, which allowed enough room to slide a file under to rasp off excess hoof. Lacey would only stand on the board a few seconds at a time, finding it more comfortable to have her leg lifted up and stretched forward to rest on the hoof stand so the undercarriage could be worked on.
