WOODEN BAT BASEBALL: Lefties sweep the Gumbaroos

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Lefties on Sunday got a pair of home runs from Jeremy Giesegh while crushing the Seattle Gumbaroos on Sunday 17-2 to complete a three-game sweep over the Pacific International League club.

That gives Giesegh (Cal State San Bernardino) four home runs for the season, two in nonleague games and two in West Coast League games.

Roberto Nunez (Embry-Riddle) remained hot, hitting a home run and Jason Leon (Cal State, Bakersfield) added a home run. Leon, Nunez and Giesegh all finished with four RBIs.

On the mound Alec Hagopian (Embry-Riddle), Tyler Bebout (Capital Univ.) and Drew Pfundt (Capital Univ.) combined for a three-hitter, striking out 10 and walking one.

The Lefties also beat the Gumbaroos 9-0 on Saturday and 8-7 on Friday on a walk-off home run by Colin Spear.

Saturday’s Game Port Angeles 9, Seattle 0

The Lefties got a four-hit, seven-strikeout shutout from a trio of pitchers in dominating the Seattle Gumbaroos 9-0 on Saturday night.

Eric Schumann (Embry-Riddle University) pitched four innings, allowing one hit and walking none to earn the victory. He struck out two. Jack Joyce (Mount Hood Community College) also pitched four innings, allowing a hit and walking two and striking out four.

Ryan Wike (University of Jamestown) finished up, pitching an inning and giving up two hits and no walks while striking out one.

At the plate, Nunez went 2-for-4 with a double, scoring two runs and driving in two. He also walked. Kosie Suzuki (Saitama, Japan and Frank Phillips College) also had a double.

Spencer Dickinson (Saipan and Oklahoma Baptist University) got on base in every plate appearance. He had a hit, a run scored, an RBI, two walks and was hit by a pitch.

Colin Spear (Nevada), a day after his late-game heroics the night before, had a hit and an RBI. Zach Blair (Mount Hood CC) had a run scored, an RBI and three walks.

Friday’s Game Port Angeles 8, Seattle 7

The Lefties won in dramatic fashion Friday night against the Seattle Gumbaroos, getting a walk-off two-run home run from Spear to end the game with an 8-7 victory.

Spear hit his home run after the Gumbaroos scored five runs in the top of the ninth to take the lead in the nonleague game.

The bottom of the ninth began with a walk by Dickinson. Blair came in to pinch run, representing the tying run. He stole second base, then moved to third base on an error before Spear’s bomb.

Colby Scheuber of tiny Ocosta pitched great. He started the game, going six innings and allowing just three hits while striking out five. He left the game with a 3-0 lead. Joshua Verkuilen got the final out of the ninth inning and earned the victory.

Travis Helm (Central Washington) was 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Ethan Kodama (University of California, Berkeley) was 2-for-5 with two RBIs.

Brett Haggerty (Yakima Valley College) was 2-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored and Adrian Arriaga (Point Loma Nazarene) had a two-run single in the eighth inning that turned out to be critical to the victory. He also scored a run. Drew Pfundt (Capital University) pitched a scoreless inning, walking one batter.

The Lefties (3-2 nonleague, have Monday off, then go on their first long road trip of the year, returning to West Coast League action against Walla Walla and Corvallis, Ore., beginning in Walla Walla on Tuesday and returning on June 18 to face Ridgefield.
