PREP SOFTBALL: Sequim caps off big week by beating Roughriders

PORT ANGELES — Jayla Julmist and Isabelle Dennis led Sequim softball to a 9-4 nonleague win over rival Port Angeles on Thursday at Dry Creek Elementary School.

The two teams had open slots on their schedules and like they did in 2018, played a nonleague game to stay sharp during the postseason push.

Dennis picked up the win on the mound for the Wolves, throwing a complete game.

Julmist led Sequim at the plate with three hits and teammates Christy Grubb, Bobbi Sparks and LeeAnn Raney each added a pair of hits to pace the Wolves’ offense.

The Roughriders managed 10 hits with Lucah Folden leading the way with three and Hope O’Connor and Madi Roening adding a pair apiece. But Port Angeles couldn’t plate runners thanks to some solid Sequim defense.

“Christy Grubb, Lily Fili and Vicki Lelle had great defensive plays to keep PA from scoring,” Wolves coach Tim Lusk said.

The victory capped a week in which Sequim picked up two huge Olympic League wins in its bid to earn the No. 2 seed to the district tournament.

The Wolves edged fourth-place Olympic 9-8 on Monday and knocked off league champion North Kitsap 8-3 on Wednesday.

Against the Vikings, Raney — a freshman who has become a force as the season has progressed — scattered five hits and went 3 for 4 at the plate with four RBIs to spark Sequim.

Fili, also a freshman, added three hits for the Wolves and Sparks, Dennis and freshman Kiana Robideau each added two hits.

“Good pitching, good hitting and no errors put [us] in a tie for second with PA,” Lusk said.

Sequim (8-3, 11-4) has one more Olympic League contest remaining, at Bremerton on Thursday.

Port Angeles (7-3, 9-7) has two more league games left and both are home contest — Tuesday against North Mason and Thursday against Kingston.

The rivals split the season series, so a tie for second at 9-3 in league play is a likely outcome.

Sequim Athletic Director Dave Ditlefsen said a coin toss or a tiebreaker game has been discussed with Port Angeles, but no decision has been made.

“We discussed it, but agreed to wait until we know for sure,” Ditlefsen said.
