PREP ROUNDUP: Sequim girls shine at Shelton track invitational

SHELTON — The Sequim girls track team had a particularly strong showing at the 63rd annual Shelton Invitational Track and Field meet held Saturday.

Sequim girls took first in two events and finished eighth as a team with 26 points, going up against 35 other schools, including 19 A and 4A schools.

Taking first in her event was the Wolves’ Ivy Barrett in the 400 meters with a personal-record time of 1 minute, 0.87 seconds. Her teammate Dawn Hulstedt won the 1,600-meter freshman/sophomore race with a time of 4:55.79, also a personal record.

Sequim also finished third in the 4×400 girls relay (Hi’ilei Robinson, Kaitlyn Bloomenrader, Jolene Vaara, Barrett) in a time of 4:15.47. Vaara also finished third in the long jump with a personal-record leap of 17 feet, 1¼ inches.

The Sequim girls had 26 points. Winning the girls meet was Central Kitsap with 68 points. East Jefferson was 21st with 11 points.

Several other local track athletes placed at the meet. East Jefferson’s Fiona Fraser was second in the 3,200 meters with a personal-record time of 11 minutes, 19.63 seconds. Port Angeles’ Leia Larson was fourth in the 1,600 with a personal-record time of 5:45.07.

In the boys meet, Port Angeles’ Jack Gladfelter placed in three events. He came in second in the 1,600 in a time of 4:26.35, just a half-second out of first as the race was won by John Hoffer of Tumwater. Gladfelter also finished second in the 1-mile run with a time of 4w:27.91, again a half-second behind Hoffer. Gladfelter added a fourth-place finish in the 3,200 with a season-best time of 9:41.60.

Sequim’s Mirek Skov was second in the pole vault with a height of 12-8. His sibling Ari Skov was fourth at 12-2, a personal record. Sequim’s Andrew Brown was fourth in the high jump with a height of 5-10.

Port Angeles finished 15th with 17 points, while Sequim was 16th with 16.5 points. Gig Harbor won the boys meet with 68 points.

This is the final regular-season meet for track and field teams from East Jefferson, Sequim, Port Angeles, Crescent, Clallam Bay, Neah Bay and Forks begin league and postseason championships this week.

Baseball

Seattle Christian 3, East Jefferson 2

SEATTLE — The East Jefferson Rivals rallied in the sixth and seventh innings, but fell just short of catching Seattle Christian in a 3-2 loss Saturday.

The duo of Brody Moore and Rhiann Popp pitched a great game. Moore went four innings, allowing three hits and one earned run while striking out six. Popp pitched three innings in relief, allowing four hits and an earned run while striking out three.

East Jefferson had the tying run 90 feet away in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn’t bring him in. Down 3-0 in the bottom of the sixth, the Rivals got singles from Moore and Nate Naylor and a walk from Popp. Moore was able to come in on a Cash Holmes groundout.

In the bottom of the seventh, Aaron Glanz got on base after being hit by a pitch. He came in on a Rylan Dunn double. Dunn then stole third, but with two outs, Moore flied out to right field.

Moore finished 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Naylor was 2-for-3. Peter Giddens hit a double and Glanz finished with three stolen bases. It was the fourth one-run loss of the year for the hard-luck Rivals.

East Jefferson (1-16) next hosts Sequim (9-8) at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Chimacum.

MOSSYROCK — Forks has been running roughshod over its Pacific 2B League opponents lately, but got to play against a good nonleague team Saturday, getting swept in a pair of close games by Mossyrock, 4-2 and 9-7.

In the 4-2 loss, the Spartans got good games from pitchers Gunner Rogers and Landen Olson. Rogers went 3⅓ innings, giving up three hits, one walk and one earned run. He struck out six. Olson gave up two hits, an earned run and a walk while striking out two.

The Spartans, who came in to the games on a six-game winning streak, could manage just five hits against the Vikings. Walker Wheeler went 2-for-3 with a triple, while Aiden Salazar, Landin Davis and Rogers all had singles.

In game 2, Forks pitchers allowed just six hits, but Mossyrock was able to take advantage of eight walks and five Forks errors.

Rogers hit a pair of doubles, scoring one run and driving in one. Davis went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Dylan Micheau also hit 2-for-4.

On the mound, Olson went the first 1 2/3, giving up one hit and two earned runs. He struck out one and walked three. Salazar went 2⅔, allowing four hits and three earned runs. He struck out one and walked five. Emmanuel Hernandez-Stansbury went 1⅔ with one hit and two strikeouts.

Forks (6-1, 8-4) has a huge doubleheader Tuesday, possibly for the Pacific 2B League championship. The Spartans play at Ilwaco (7-1, 10-3) on Tuesday.

Softball

Gig Harbor 9, Sequim 8

GIG HARBOR — The Sequim softball team took Gig Harbor to the final inning, but the Tides were able to fend off the Wolves with a run in the bottom of the seventh to win 9-8.

Gig Harbor scored the winning run without the benefit of a hit. The Tides got a baserunner on after a hit batsman, who then scored on a groundout and an error.

Sequim got another huge game from Mia Pozernick, who hit a three-run home run and finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Taylee Rome was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs while Mia Kirner hit a triple, drove in a run and scored a run. Sammie Bacon was 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI.

On the rubber, Hannah Bates pitched an inning, giving up two hits. Lainey Vig went five innings, allowing eight hits and five earned runs and Rome pitched 1⅓ innings, allowing a run. Rome took the loss.

Sequim (7-3, 7-5) next plays at North Mason (3-6, 4-6) on Tuesday.

Boys Soccer

East Jefferson 1, Charles Wright 0, forfeit

PORT TOWNSEND — East Jefferson was awarded a 1-0 forfeit over Charles Wright in the Rivals’ final game of the season. Coach Robert Cantley said Charles Wright was having trouble fielding a full team.

East Jefferson concludes its season with a 4-10-1 record, with the young team missing out on a postseason berth.
