Girls Soccer Port Angeles 2, Olympic 1

BREMERTON — The Port Angeles Roughriders remained unbeaten with a tough 2-1 road win over Olympic.

“I don’t think we’ve ever beaten Olympic on their home turf,” said Rider coach Scott Moseley. “It is a field that we always struggle on, but we dominated play tonight and earned the win.”

Millie Long scored her 20th goal of the season in the 38th minute. Kiana Watson-Charles played a ball to Long, who was able to barely get the ball past the Trojans’ keeper.

“That our ugliest goal of the season, but they all count the same,” said Moseley

Bailee Larson scored her fourth goal of the year on a cross from Jada Cargo. Moseley said Larson had long stretches of dominant play in the middle of the field through the match.

Olympic was able to earn a penalty kick in the 67th minute for a late goal to make the score close, but the Trojans’ late surge was held back by strong play from the Rider midfield, Moseley said.. The Trojans finished the game with only one shot on goal. Moseley praised the play of his two center backs, Lucah Folden and Bella Money for that statistic.

“They both came up big in different situations and played confident soccer,” he said. The Port Angeles JV squad also won 3-2.

The Roughriders have now outscored their opponents 40-4.

Port Angeles (6-0-0 18 points, 9-0-0) next travels to Sequim (2-4-0 7 points, 3-4-1) to take on the Wolves at 6:45 p.m.

PA travels to Sequim next Tuesday as both teams start the second half of their league play.

Sequim 5, Kingston 0

SEQUIM — The Sequim girls snapped a three-game losing streak with a 5-0 shutout over Kingston.

The Wolves got two goals from Abby Schroeder and goals from Eden Johnson, Hannah Wagner and Jessica Dietzman. Olivia Hare earned the shutout in goal.

“They played extremely well,” said coach Derek Vandervelde. “They were calm and didn’t try to force anything.”

Vandervelde said the win will hopefully help the Wolves turn the corner much like last season.

“Their confidence is building,” Vandervelde said.

Last year, the Wolves had a rough first half, got red-hot in the second half to earn a playoff spot as a fourth-place seed. Then, they went on win the district tournament and go to state.

And the game that turned around the season for the Wolves in 2018? It was a big win against Port Angeles. Coincidentally, the red-hot and undefeated Roughriders (6-0-0, 9-0-0) visit Sequim (2-4-0, 3-4-1) at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday.
