Port Angeles: Boys frosh-soft team wins national championship

LAS VEGAS — The Port Angeles boys freshman/sophomore basketball team went undefeated and won the national championship this past week.

Port Angeles had a perfect 5-0 record after it ripped the Colorado Classic 68-53 in the national championship game on Wednesday.

The area team competed in the frosh/sophomore team from the same-school division at the Las Vegas National Championship tournament.

Scott Helpenstell sparked Port Angeles in the championship game with 17 points while Brandon Hunt sank 15 and Jeff Haguewood added nine.

Coaches Jim Bissonette and Jim Haguewood both said they were thrilled with the boys ability to work as a team and pull together when the pressure was on.
