ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Harper McGuire, Port Angeles girls swimming

The Port Angeles High School girls swim team is having a spectacular start to its season, going 4-1 in its first five meets with the only loss to 3A powerhouse Bainbridge. All of those wins have been by wide margins.

The Roughriders have multiple repeat winners this season, but one of the leaders of the team has been Harper McGuire.

McGuire has already qualified for the state 2A swim championships with a qualifying time in the 500 freestyle, set at a Sept. 27 meet against Kingston. She has also qualified for the district meet in four events — the 100 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle.

McGuire is also a team member of the Riders’ 200 medley relay team and 200 free style relay team that has taken first in meets against Bremerton, Kingston and Sequim.

The Port Angeles girls were fifth at the state championships last year and with a deep team, they are looking at making noise at state again this year.
