ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Colton McGuffey, Port Angeles baseball

Port Angeles’ Colton McGuffey did it all for the Roughriders’ baseball team in an 8-1 win Thursday over North Mason.

On the mound, McGuffey pitched six innings, giving up just five hits and one earned run while striking out six, as 62 out of his 81 pitches were strikes. He picked up the win for the Riders to help put them all alone into second place in the Olympic League 2A Division at 4-1.

At the plate, McGuffey went 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI.

It was McGuffey’s second win of the year as he gave up no runs in three innings against Bremerton earlier in the season.

McGuffey also showed last weekend that he has speed and baserunning smarts, legging out a double against Sequim on a shallow fly ball to left that would have been a single for most players.

Athlete of the Week is brought to you by the sports department at the Peninsula Daily News along with the sponsorship of Swain’s General Store serving Clallam and Jefferson counties since 1957.
