Winners of education SPICE grants announced

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Education Foundation has announced the award of 36 SPICE grants totalling $67,902.

Supporting Projects of Innovation, Creativity and Excellence (SPICE) grants are awarded for enrichment opportunities for students in the classroom and beyond.

This year’s awards include:

• Youth Day at the Juan de Fuca Festival of the Arts, $3,000, all schools, submitted by Carmen Geyer.

• Seattle Opera Tour, $1,310, all elementary schools, submitted by Vicki Helwick.

• Recorders, $800, all elementary schools — general music, submitted by Dan Cobb.

• Indigenous Treaty and Art Connections, $3,008 Trudy Kindler Native American Studies Grant, Dry Creek Elementary — Ridge, submitted by Karen Doran.

• Learning our Community’s History, $950 Trudy Kindler Native American Studies Grant, Dry Creek Elementary — fourth-graders, submitted by Katrina Leslie.

• Keyboards and marimbas, $4,500, Dry Creek Elementary — general music, submitted by Jesse Reynolds.

• Everybody Dances, Everybody Shines theatrical production, $750 Rich Boyd Grant for the Arts, Dry Creek Elementary — all students, submitted by Lambert Grimes.

• Disc golf course, $3,500, Dry Creek Elementary — all students, submitted by Jarom Packer.

• Author Mary Truly presentation, $500, Dry Creek Elementary — second-graders, submitted by Patricia Hopkins.

• Social/emotional tool kits, $1,987, Dry Creek Elementary — preschool/kindergarten, submitted by Kaitlin Alderson.

• Library fiction collection, $2,500, Hamilton Elementary — all students, submitted by Janet Vaughan.

• Budget Challenge: Road Test for Personal Finance, $500, Port Angeles High School — special education, submitted by Shirlene Fitzwater.

• Trip to State Capitol in Olympia, $1,025, Port Angeles High School — civics/political science, submitted by Stacey Sanders.

• Acoustic and electric guitars, $4,300, Port Angeles High School — guitar class, submitted by Jarrett Hansen.

• ViewSonic smart board bundle, $4,177, Port Angeles High School — English 10, submitted by Brooke Hoefler.

• Supplemental lab equipment, $580, Port Angeles High School — chemistry/biology, submitted by Rodger Johnson.

• Whiteboard technology, $4,739, Port Angeles High School — ELA special education, submitted by Deziree Greenstreet.

The Foundation also granted an additional $10,000 to the Port Angeles School District’s AmeriCorps tutor/mentor program.
