Search steps up at Lake Crescent for missing woman

OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK — The search for a woman who went into Lake Crescent on an inflatable unicorn raft continued Wednesday with the help of the Kitsap County Dive Team.

Lena Lang of Federal Way, 35, was at the lake with a friend but has not been seen since late afternoon Monday, said Patte Danisiewicz, secretary to the superintendent.

Danisiewicz said she entered the lake at milepost 225 on U.S. Highway 101.

The search and rescue operation began after a 9-1-1 call at 5:54 p.m. Monday reporting that Lang was missing.

On Wednesday, the Kitsap County Dive Team and the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office joined the search.

“Search efforts have been expanded so that all possibilities can be explored,” said Acting Superintendent Lee Taylor.

“We appreciate the expertise of the Kitsap County Dive Team, Clallam County, U.S Coast Guard and the U.S. Navy to aid in the search.”

Park rangers immediately searched the area by boat Monday, and the U.S. Navy conducted an aerial search. Rangers returned to the lake at 6 a.m. Tuesday and the U.S. Coast Guard continued the aerial search.

The park is asking that anyone who visited the shores of Lake Crescent from Barnes Point to Fairholme on Monday between noon and 6 p.m. and observed the use of a white unicorn personal inflatable raft to call or text Olympic National Park at 888-653-0009.

About 150 to 200 people jumped into 49-degree water at Hollywood Beach on Jan. 1, 2025, for the 37th annual Polar Bear Dip. The air temperature was about 39 degrees, so it was a short, brisk dip that they did three times. There was a beach fire to warm the dippers afterward as well as two portable saunas in the parking lot. The event was sponsored by Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County under the leadership of organizer Dan Welden. Hot drinks, tasty muffins and a certificate for participants were available.
