Refuge from the cold in Jefferson County

Shelters and warming centers are offered in Port Townsend.

• The Jefferson County Emergency Shelter offers both overnight and daytime refuge during the winter.

It is located on the lower level of the American Legion Hall at 209-A Monroe St., Port Townsend.

Shelter is offered to adults 18 and older from 4 p.m. to 8 a.m.

The shelter also operates a warming center for adult individuals when the temperature in Port Townsend and surrounding areas goes into the lower 30s and/or below freezing temperatures.

The hours are the same as the shelter.

• The Winter Welcome Center at the Marine Park Community Building in Pope Marine Park on Water Street is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and longer in severe weather.

The present freezing temperatures constitute severe weather, said Julia Cochrane, a founder and steering team member, on Thursday.

The center will be open until 4 p.m. at least through today, she said.

The center, which will be available through April 15, is run by the Jefferson Interfaith Action Coalition and provides warmth, WiFi, bathrooms, laundry and YMCA shower vouchers, and community for those who have nowhere else to go.

The center is in need of blankets, sleeping bags and pads, tents and other basic camping supplies, Cochrane said.

To donate, take items to the center between 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. or call Cochran.
