PORT ANGELES – A Ukrainian sailor who nearly lost his leg in a shipboard accident in November was discharged from Olympic Medical Center last week and is now in a local convalescent home.
Before he left the hospital, Vyacheslav Kornya – called “Slava” at OMC because his first name was difficult for staffers to pronounce – made several new friends.
Strangers bearing gifts visited Kornya on Christmas Day and through the week, said Rhonda Curry, hospital spokesperson.
The 45-year-old sailor’s injury, Coast Guard rescue and treatment at OMC were reported by the Peninsula Daily News on Christmas Eve.
Kornya is a native of Odessa, Ukraine.
His wife, Lyudmila Serbinova, and their 14-year-old daughter, Arina, are at their home in the Ukraine.
