PORT TOWNSEND — Jefferson Healthcare hospital will host an open house at 5:30 p.m. Monday for the public to meet two new orthopedic surgeons.

Drs. Ken Koskella and Erin Moyer will tell about their backgrounds during the open house in the hospital’s Dirksen Auditorium at 834 Sheridan St.

The two are the newest doctors at Jefferson Healthcare Orthopedic Clinic.

The clinic, in partnership with WestSound Orthopaedics, will provide an expanded spectrum of orthopedic care and services, said Kate Burke, hospital marketing director.

No flight practice set in Coupeville

COUPEVILLE — There will be no field carrier landing practice operations for aircraft stationed at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island at the outlying field in Coupeville between today and Saturday.

QUUF adult learning

PORT TOWNSEND — Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship has announced its fall Adult Learning Programs.

Special events, courses and ongoing groups will be offered to the public free of charge from mid-September through December.

Offerings are designed to meet a variety of interests — one-day workshops, lectures and field trips and weekly courses exploring personal belief systems, academic subjects, creativity, physical activity and lifestyle challenges and choices.

There are also ongoing groups devoted to reading, knitting, meditation and playing the recorder.

Course brochures will be available beginning Monday at the fellowship, the Port Townsend and Jefferson County libraries, and the Port Townsend Community Center, or can be downloaded at www.quuf.org under “Adult Programs.”

There is no fee, though some classes may involve book or materials costs, and field trips may involve travel expenses or entry fees.

Child care is available by request for programs during after-school hours.

Growing kiwis

PORT TOWNSEND — This month’s Jefferson County WSU Master Gardeners educational lecture is “Growing Kiwi on the Olympic Peninsula.”

This free brown-bag garden lecture takes place Monday from noon to 1 p.m. at the WSU Extension office in Point Hudson, 380 Jefferson St.

The public is welcome to the free event.

The “Port Townsend Kiwi Man,” Dennis Schultz, will discuss kiwi varieties, care, feeding, pruning and harvesting.

Schultz has been selling kiwis every fall at a number of Seattle farmers markets since 1997. His kiwi plants are a Siberian variety of fruit with smooth, green edible skins. They are well-suited to the Peninsula climate.

Questions and sharing personal kiwi growing advice are encouraged throughout the lecture.

Garden club meets

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Garden Club will kick off its regularly scheduled 2014-15 meetings Monday.

The first general meeting will start at 9:30 a.m. with coffee and social time at First Presbyterian Church at 139 W. Eighth St.

This month’s theme is “Birds of a Feather.”

Christie Lassen, owner of Wild Birds Unlimited in Gardener, is the featured speaker at 10 a.m.

A brown-bag lunch will follow the speaker, then a short business meeting.

New this year is a craft and/or educational program beginning at 1 p.m.

This month’s project is “How to Enter a Flower Show.”

All visitors, prospective members or interested community people are welcome to attend.

Senior nutrition

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles Senior Nutrition Site dinners will be served at 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday at the Port Angeles Senior Center, 328 E. Seventh St.

A suggested donation is $5 for those who are 60 or older.

People younger than 60 can attend for $8.

Reservations should be made 24 hours in advance to 360-457-8921.

Menus are subject to change.

■ Tuesday: Waldorf salad, chicken cordon bleu, rice pilaf, lima beans and peach crisp.

■ Wednesday: Green salad, spaghetti and meatballs, green beans, garlic bread and watermelon.

■ Thursday: Coleslaw, barbecue ribs, baked beans, corn cobbette, biscuit and apple pie.

■ Friday: Three-bean salad, baked cod, baked potato, glazed carrots and sherbet.

MANNA open house slated this Tuesday

PORT ANGELES — MANNA, or Ministry Assisting Neighbors in Need with Agape, will host an open house at First Presbyterian Church, 139 W. Eighth St., from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday.

The open house will be in the second-floor MANNA office.

MANNA provides financial assistance to people in Port Angeles who need short-term help.

It is financed by a group of local churches, a small number of grants and individual contributions.

Christmas chorus

SEQUIM — The Sequim Community Christmas Chorus, preparing to launch its 30th season of presenting Christmas music for the community, is looking for singers.

Rehearsals will begin this Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., with a 6 p.m. registration, at Sequim Seventh-day Adventist Church, 30 Sanford Lane, off Sequim-Dungeness Way.

Rehearsals will continue Tuesday nights, and performances will take place Dec. 5 at 7:30 p.m., Dec. 6 at 3 p.m. and Dec. 7 at 3 p.m.

The chorus will be directed by Gary McRoberts and accompanied by pianist Kayla Dyment.

The chorus is open to singers of all levels of experience, and participation requires no fees or auditions.

Although the chorus sings only sacred music, it has no religious affiliation and is presented in cooperation with the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Boating meeting

PORT TOWNSEND — Linda Newland will present “Partners in Command” at the Point Wilson Sail and Power Squadron meeting at the Port Townsend Yacht Club, 2503 Washington St., at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

“Partner in Command” is a Power Squadron seminar that provides information for spouses, sailing partners and crew members who may or may not have taken a boating course.

It is designed to help prepare someone who may need to assist a skipper in the safe operation of a recreational boat.

Newland is a certified sailing instructor and holds a Coast Guard merchant marine 100-ton license.

Members of the public are invited to bring a dish and attend the squadron’s monthly potluck at 6 p.m. before the presentation.

Climate change

CHIMACUM — The Jefferson County Republican Central Committee will sponsor a public meeting on climate change at the Tri-Area Community Center, 10 West Valley Road, at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The featured speaker is Gene Farr, a retired space systems architect and chairman of the county’s Republican Party.

The topic of the presentation is “The Climate Con: A Phony Crisis.”

SEQUIM — The Michael Trebert chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will hold its fall meeting at the Monterra Subdivision clubhouse off Finn Hall Road on Wednesday.

The meeting begins at 10:30 a.m., with a social to follow at 11 a.m.

The public is invited.

The event is part of Constitution Week, which celebrates the 226th anniversary of the U.S. Constitution.

Guest speaker Charlotte Abbott will speak on “Our Guiding Light: Prologue to the Constitution.”

Tide pools for tots

PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend Marine Science Center, 532 Battery Way, will offer a Tide Pool Toddlers program at the marine exhibit at Fort Worden Beach from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Tots can experience touch-pools in the exhibit, participate in a lab activity and create marine-inspired art.

This event is for potty-trained toddlers, ages 3-5.

The price is $10 per child, free for science center members.

NAMI affiliate meeting set this Thursday

PORT ANGELES — A National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Clallam County affiliate meeting will take place in Olympic Medical Center’s Linkletter Room, 939 Caroline St., at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

The meeting is open to all family members and friends of adults and children who live with mental illness. Anyone who is interested in mental illness is also invited.

The scheduled program will begin at 7 p.m. and consists of several boards of directors sharing their experience and gained knowledge at the recent state conference in Vancouver, Wash.

The theme of the conference was “Destigmatizing and Decriminalizing Mental Illness.” A wide variety of sessions led by highly qualified professionals was available to attendees at the conference, some of which were in regard to children, veterans, mental health pharmacology and legal issues.

Chorus plans concert this Saturday

SEQUIM –– Grand Olympics Chorus of Sweet Adelines International will present “Yahoo! It’s a Harmony Hoedown!” in the Sequim High School auditorium, 601 N. Sequim Ave., on Saturday.

Shows are at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for students and seniors.

In addition to the chorus, the concert features performances by the Olympic Peninsula Men’s Chorus, the Young Fiddlers, No Batteries Required and Treble Around the Sound, and will feature Aspire!, Region 13 silver medalists from the regional women’s quartet competition, held in Spokane in April.

Fall garden sale

SEQUIM — The Sequim Prairie Garden Club will hold a fall garden sale at Pioneer Memorial Park, 387 E. Washington St., from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

In addition to a large selection of perennials, shrubs and trees from members’ gardens, there will be home-baked goods, fresh garden produce, garden art, books, other gardening-related items, a raffle and more.

Participants should arrive early for the best selection.

Proceeds from the event will be used to maintain and beautify the park.

Appliance recycling

SEQUIM — The Olympic Peninsula Bluebills, Boeing retirees, are sponsoring an electrical, electronics and appliance recycling day in the Sequim Valley Nazarene Church parking lot, 481 Carlsborg Road, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27.

The Bluebills, in cooperation with ECycleNW of Sequim, are conducting this charity recycling fundraiser to help pay for membership in the World Vision Essential Supplies Program.

All household items powered by electrical cord or battery are recyclable.

With few exceptions, items will recycle free of charge.

ECycleNW accepts computers, monitors and related peripherals, televisions, audio and video equipment, handheld electrical devices, lead acid batteries, rechargeable household batteries, washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, etc.

The owner is responsible for ensuring that any proprietary data or software has been removed from equipment received by EcycleNW.

ECycleNW is waiving its usual $7 fee for vacuum cleaners, microwaves and plastic-drum washing machines.

The following items require a $30 recycling fee: refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifiers and air conditioners.

Fees are required because the refrigerant must be fully recovered.

Items can be dropped off or picked up.

There is a $10 fee for picked-up items.

$8,000 grants

PORT ANGELES — United Way of Clallam County Executive Director Jody Moss has presented grants of $8,000 each to First Step Family Support Center Director Nita Lynn and Healthy Families of Clallam County Director Becca Korby.

The grants are distributions from the Carol Munro Fund of the Clallam Community Foundation, which is the United Way of Clallam County endowment.

Carol Munro, 60, was a longtime Port Angeles community member who died unexpectedly in 2009 after a very short illness.

Her husband, Grant Munro, and daughters set up a perpetual fund in her memory from which distributions are made to agencies that provide services to young families.
