Martin Luther King Jr., the civil rights activist who was assassinated in 1968, will be remembered today during North Olympic Peninsula events dedicated to his memory.

Film screening
PORT TOWNSEND — A free screening of “King in the Wilderness” is planned at the Rose Theatre at 1 p.m. today.
The 2018 documentary focusing on the final 18 months of the life of Martin Luther King Jr. will be shown at the theater at 235 Taylor St. Tickets are available only at the box office. The theater seats 158 people.
The film about the civil rights activist, which premiered April 2 on HBO, includes some original footage of interviews with those closest to him interspersed with historical archives.

Weed pull
PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend Marine Science Center will host its seventh Martin Luther King Day of Service at noon today.
Volunteers should meet at the center’s museum, 532 Battery Way.
This year’s project is to pull invasive European dune grass from Fort Worden beaches.
Some tools will be provided but volunteers are encouraged to wear gloves and bring a shovel.
Light refreshments will be provided.

School orchard
PORT TOWNSEND — A Martin Luther King Day service project is set from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. today.
Volunteers will be caring for the orchard at Blue Heron Middle School, 3939 San Juan Ave.
The project includes spreading 50 cubic yards of mulch so volunteers are asked to bring 5-gallon buckets, shovels, rakes, wheelbarrows and flattened cardboard if they have them.
Gloves, water bottles and snacks are also recommended.

MLK Swim
PORT TOWNSEND — Mountain View Pool will hold an open swim from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today.
The pool is located at 1925 Blaine St.
Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for kids with a family rate of $12.
Children younger than 8 must be accompanied by an adult.

Infinite Hope
PORT ANGELES — Members of Save Our Sequoia are organizing a Martin Luther King Day event from noon to 1:30 p.m. today.
The public event will be held in Lions Park, 601 E. Whidby Ave. The event will feature a variety of speakers, music by Ivy and Joel Ricci as well as tea, coffee and cookies.
According to a press release the event will be held rain or shine.
New garden
PORT ANGELES — There will be a Day of Service in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. at Franklin Elementary School today.
Volunteers will prepare the new garden at the school at 2505 S. Washington St., from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.
