JOYCE — With the war in Iraq still fresh in the minds of area residents, the meaning of Memorial Day hit close to home this year.
Crescent High School honor student Erin Moilanen shared that realization with more than 100 people who turned out Monday for the annual Memorial Day observance at Port Crescent Pioneer Cemetery to remember America’s service men and women.
“We are gathered to remember and honor the men and women who fought for and served our country,” Moilanen said.
During her keynote address under blue skies at the historical cemetery across from Crescent Beach, Moilanen recalled graphic television images of war in Iraq.
