PORT TOWNSEND — A commemorative plaque installed on the newly renovated Memorial Field gate was stolen last week, to the surprise and anger of the volunteers who installed it.
The Rakers Car Club paid for the gates to be powder coated last year and installed the plaque just before Christmas.
It was noticed as missing Friday.
The 5-inch-by-8-inch plaque was attached to the gate with a backing and was made of coated aluminium with black lettering that noted the club’s contribution and included its logo, the profile of a 1930-era Ford coupe on a rake.
Club member Mike Hinojos, who installed the plaque, said club members were upset it was taken.
He hadn’t expected it to be stolen and so had not strongly secured it to the gate.
“It was a really cool plaque,” he said. “I guess someone really wanted it.”
Anyone with information about the plaque is asked to contact the Port Townsend Police Department at 360-385-2322.
