— Clallam County will study the possibility of a joint animal shelter operated with Jefferson County after two county commissioners listened Monday to more than 150 animal lovers express their frustrations about the present Humane Society shelter in west Port Angeles.
Calling for the joint, two-county facility, Olympic Alliance for Animals representative Ann Gilson of Port Angeles said the situation at the shelter on U.S. Highway 101 south of the airport is “heart-breaking and disturbing.”
Gilson presented commissioners with a half-inch-thick report done in July 2002 titled, “The Case for a Clallam County Animal Shelter,” outlining Humane Society shelter issues.
It included shelter history from 1995 to the present, alleged animal neglect and cruelty, shelter statistics, the status of the county’s Animal Issues Advisory Committee — and the recommendation for a joint shelter with Jefferson County.
Interim Humane Society Animal Shelter Direct John Alger, who was at Monday night’s meeting, said he would need dates of incidents and names of employees involved before he could address any of the accusations.
