Activities mark MLK Day

Free entrance into Olympic National Park is one of the events marking Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day today.

Entrance fees, which are $25 per vehicle, into the national park will be waived today, as well as into state parks.

The national park entrance fee waiver does not cover camping or special tours such as guided snowshoe walks.

Hurricane Ridge Road is scheduled to be open for the holiday today, weather permitting. The road is scheduled to open at 9 a.m. and close to uphill traffic at 4 p.m. All vehicles are required to carry tire chains.

As of Sunday afternoon, the Ridge had 59 inches of snow at its sensor.

For up-to-date information, call the park’s recorded Road & Weather Hotline at 360-565-3131 or follow @HRWinterAccess on Twitter.

Day-use visitors will not need a Discover Pass to visit state parks today.

The Discover Pass is a $30 annual or $10 one-day permit required on recreation lands managed by State Parks, the state Department of Fish and Wildlife, and the state Department of Natural Resources.

The free days apply only at state parks found at www.parks.wa.gov; the Discover Pass is still required on Fish and Wildlife and DNR lands.

Free days apply only to day use, not to overnight stays or facilities.

State parks on the North Olympic Peninsula are Bogachiel near Forks, Dosewallips near Brinnon, Fort Flagler on Marrowstone Island, Fort Townsend and Fort Worden in Port Townsend, Anderson Lake State Park near Chimacum and Sequim Bay near Sequim.

Other activities for MLK Day are:
