WEEKEND: Public invited to take a dip at pool’s open house

PORT ANGELES — The William Shore Memorial Pool District will host a grand-opening celebration and 50th anniversary remembrance at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

As part of the celebration, a public open swim will be offered at no charge following the ceremony until 4 p.m. at the pool at 225 E. Fifth St.

The 50th anniversary celebration will include appearances by members of the William Shore family and others who have been instrumental in the facility’s success over the past five decades.

Light refreshments will be served.

The pool reopened Aug. 13 after being closed for six weeks for maintenance, renovations and upgrades.

50 years of swimming

Opened in May 1962, the pool has served the community of Port Angeles over the past 50 years by providing aquatic recreational programs to people of all ages and interest groups.

The pool was named in memory of William “Bill” Shore, a longtime educator in Port Angeles schools and summer swim teacher to thousands of local children.

In 2009, the pool district took ownership of the pool from the city of Port Angeles after voters approved it.

The district’s board of commissioners is eager to share with the community the new look of the pool and the upgrades that have been done.
