Downed power line sparks brush fire near Brinnon

BRINNON — A brush fire burned about three-quarters of an acre near Brinnon.

The fire began shortly before 4 p.m. Monday. Teams from Brinnon and Quilcene fire departments responded. Bee Mill Road was closed near milepost 1.5.

A downed power line is believed to have sparked the brush fire, McKern said.

Mason Public Utility District arrived at about 4:45 p.m. and shut off the power up Bee Mill Road.

“This is a weather thing. Everything is just super dry,” McKern said. “This is weather that we’d expect in August, not in June.”

By 5:30 p.m., crews had the fire contained, said Quilcene Fire Chief Tim McKern.

The crews had the fire extinguished by about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday morning. Crews continued mop-up actions through the afternoon to make sure there were no hot-spots, said Brinnon Fire Chief Tim Manly.

The teams were helped by greenery that slowed the spread of the fire. It had not dried out yet and acted as a border, McKern said.

Teams from the state Department of Natural Resources, East Jefferson Fire Rescue, Discovery Bay Fire & Rescue, Port Ludlow Fire & Rescue and Mason County districts 1 and 17 also responded to the fire.
