PORT ANGELES — Crews from the city of Port Angeles worked Monday to clear what remained of a much-debated sequoia — which activists had named Hope — from Lions Park.

The park has been closed to the public since the city felled the tree early Thursday morning.

One protester, Devon Gray, has been charged with second-degree criminal trespass and obstructing a law enforcement officer.

The city has maintained that the 110-foot sequoia posed a safety risk and had shallow roots that were damaging a nearby property.

Officials said they will contact the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe to possibly use the trunk for a city project.
