PORT ANGELES — Roosevelt Elementary School students, staff and families gathered donations recently during the school’s annual holiday food, coat and book drive to help more than 60 Roosevelt families in need.

Students and staff collected nonperishable food items; children’s books; toiletries such as toilet paper, toothpaste, soap, shampoo and deodorant; and winter clothing items such as coats, hats, gloves, boots and snow pants.

Through friendly competition, students and staff gathered 8,376 items — clothing, books, food and cash donations.

More than $2,000 was collected to purchase turkeys and additional food items for the families.

The cash total includes $320 in concessions from an evening orchestra concert and a $500 donation from the Parent-Teacher Organization.
