OLYMPIA — The state Department of Natural Resources has updated a map of the North Olympic Peninsula areas around Forks that details roads, property boundaries, trails and recreation sites on public land.

Also updated and available for purchase are maps of the area around Hermiston near the Columbia Gorge and Chehalis River in southwest Washington.

DNR publishes 50 Public Lands Quadrangle maps. Each map costs $9, plus shipping costs and sales tax for state residents. Discounts are available for large purchases.

Each full-color map shows the landscape in a 1:100,000 scale in which 1 inch equals about 1.6 miles and covers an area of about 1,600 square miles.

Featuring shaded relief to indicate terrain, the 26-inch-by-37-inch maps show highways, roads, trails, water features, wildlife areas and other key features.

The maps show public lands managed by DNR, the state Department of Fish and Wildlife and the state Parks and Recreation Commission, as well as lands managed by federal agencies.

The maps are used by hunters and backcountry hikers, as well as emergency responders.

Maps can be purchased online at http://tinyurl.com/PDN-dnrmaps or in person between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. from the state Department of Printing, 7580 New Market St. S.W., Tumwater. For information, phone 360-570-5555.
