COUPEVILLE — Some early offense and solid pitching led to a 5-1 Port Townsend victory in the baseball team’s first game of the season.

Sophomore Joey Walvatne — who went 3-for-3 with an RBI, a double and a run scored — ignited the Redskin offense from the start.

His leadoff double in the first inning was followed by an Ian Robinson walk, a Josh Orr RBI single and a Tyler Kelly single that plated two runners.

Port Townsend added another run in the second inning on a Walvatne RBI single that scored Cody Reaves to put the Redskins ahead 4-0.

Reaves brought home the Redskins’ final run in the third inning on a squeeze bunt.

Meanwhile, the left-handed Orr did his job on the mound, earning the victory with three strikeouts over three innings of shutout baseball.

“If there was a key to this game, early on we had boys get some hits with two strikes,” Port Townsend head coach Tom Kent said.

“And after that our defense and pitching helped.”
