Peninsula: Road detour plan worries businesses

PYSHT — A road construction project that will close state Highway 112 during the peak tourist season has business managers like Herb Rempel pondering the summer’s economic effect.
Closing the highway in mid-August and September for a project less than a mile east of Silver King Resort could spell disaster, said Rempel.
It will be the peak of summer coho salmon fishing season at the resort owned by Merrill & Ring Timber Co.
Silver King is popular for its jetty-protected boat launch, grocery store bait and tackle shop, and 38 recreational-vehicle campsites.
“It’s going to just devastate us,” said Rempel, manager of the fishing resort on the Strait of Juan de Fuca, which will be less than a mile west of the state Department of Transportation’s Jim Creek project on state Highway 112.
