LETTER: The Weight of Words

The weight of words

While reading the scripture selections for this Sunday from the Common Lectionary, shared by Catholics, Lutherans, Anglicans and Methodists, a particularly powerful sentence stood out.

“The young Samuel is receiving his commission from God.”

In conclusion, the Old Testament writer states, “As Samuel grew up, the Lord was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground.”

What a marvelous illustration of the weight and value of words.

During the last four years, we have seen the obliteration of the value of words and of truthfulness.

The tweets manufactured from conspiracy theories and the fantasies of misled, fallible humans have taken the place of factual and truthful dialogue.

We will be able to repair much of the damage done during these perilous years, but the damage to our communication and our acceptance of fantastical and illogical truths will take much longer to overcome.
