SEQUIM — The U.S. Coast Guard suspended its search Wednesday morning for a man who went missing while fishing from his kayak.
Ty Coone called 911 about 3 p.m. Tuesday to report he was in distress, the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office said.
GPS coordinates from his phone placed him in the Strait of Juan de Fuca north of Cline Spit. A Small Craft Advisory was in effect at the time, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The Coast Guard initiated a search and rescue operation with air and marine assets. During a refueling period, the Sheriff’s Office deployed a drone equipped with forward-looking infrared thermal imaging (FLIR) to help the search.
The Coast Guard later recovered Coone’s kayak, life vest and paddle in the area, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The Coast Guard suspended its search at 10 a.m. Wednesday, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Coone was believed to be wearing a hoodie, rain gear, a backpack and possibly a hat and sunglasses when he disappeared, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Ground search efforts also were conducted by park rangers, lighthouse keepers and personnel from Clallam County Fire District 3.
Anyone with information that could help the investigation is asked to contact the Coast Guard via VHF Channel 16 or by calling 911.
