Art made by clients and staff of Peninsula Behavioral Health

Port Angeles behavioral staff, clients’ art on display tonight (Friday)

NOTE: “Today” and “tonight” refer to Friday, Sept. 19.

PORT ANGELES –– A special art show by Peninsula Behavioral Health will open with an artists’ reception from 5 to 7 tonight.

“It’s going to be an amazing opportunity for the community to see some hidden talent,” said Rebekah Miller, development coordinator for Peninsula Behavioral Health.

Work by clients and staff will be on display at the Heatherton Gallery in The Landing mall, 115 E. Railroad Ave., Suite 105, through next Friday, Sept. 26.

Peninsula Behavioral Health, formerly known as Peninsula Community Mental Health, offers counseling, support and medical services for adults, families and youths as well as help for people in crisis due to depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress or illness.

“A lot of our clients said they find their peace and balance and solitude through their art,” said Kathy Hansen, a worker for Peninsula Behavioral Health, based in Port Angeles.

Like Bill Soderlind, who builds and refurbishes guitars and will play during tonight’s reception.

Balance through art

“Bill’s been struggling with Parkinson’s, and I know he said working with guitars really gives him something he can do when he starts to struggle with his hands,” Miller said.

“Plus, he’s a fantastic guitarist.”

All proceeds from art sales go to the artists. Miller said that decision was made to encourage those with artistic inclinations to pursue them.

“I know one of our clients said he was hoping the show will let him build up his confidence enough to start selling his work,” Miller said.
